All About Women’s Cancer Prevention
Some cancers affect women more than men, and a few are unique to women.
Some cancers affect women more than men, and a few are unique to women. Learning about your cancer risk and taking steps to prevent it can improve your health. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States. Cervical, ovarian, and uterine cancers are also important to know about. Many of these cancers can be prevented or found early with regular screenings and healthy habits.
Regular screenings are among the most powerful tools for catching cancer early. Mammograms can detect breast cancer before you feel a lump, often when the disease is most treatable. Pap tests and HPV tests are just as important for detecting cervical cancer early. Our team will guide you through which screenings you need and when, making sure you never feel confused about your care plan.
Beyond screenings, your everyday choices also play a role in prevention, and even small changes matter. Keeping a healthy weight with good nutrition and regular exercise can lower your risk for several cancers, like breast and endometrial cancer. If you smoke, quitting is one of the most impactful steps you can take. Cutting back on alcohol is also important, since even moderate drinking can raise breast cancer risk.
The HPV vaccine protects against cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. It works best when given before exposure to the virus, usually in the preteen years, but adults up to age 26 can still benefit. If you have questions about the HPV vaccine, we are happy to walk you through your options.
Knowing your family history is another key part of cancer prevention, and we can help you understand what it means for your health. If close relatives have had breast, ovarian, or colon cancer, your risk may be higher. Our specialists can talk with you about genetic testing and extra screening options, explaining everything clearly. Women with BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene changes have a higher risk of breast and ovarian cancers. They may need to start screening earlier or consider other steps.
We want you to feel comfortable reaching out to us about any concerns. Persistent bloating, pelvic pain, changes in bowel or bladder habits, unexplained weight loss, unusual vaginal bleeding, or lumps in your breast are symptoms worth discussing with our doctors. While these symptoms don't always mean cancer, catching things early gives you more options and better outcomes. You're never bothering us by asking questions or sharing concerns. That's what we're here for.
