TULSA, OKLA – On Dec. 14, 2021 Oklahoma Cancer Specialists and Research Institute provided 24 units of blood to the American Red Cross. It was the Tulsa American Red Cross’ largest collection in their mobile unit since the COVID pandemic started.
“It is inspiring to see our team and community show up to give back to such a meaningful cause,” said Pam Doak, director of nursing. “It’s a true testimony to their passion for caring for others.”
According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. Blood donations are essential for cancer treatment, surgeries, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries. Whether a patient receives whole blood, red cells, platelets or plasma – this lifesaving care starts with one person making a generous donation.
“As the nation returns to holiday celebrations with family and friends this year, the American Red Cross faces historically low blood supply levels not seen in more than a decade. While people gather this holiday season, the Red Cross urges eligible donors to take time out to give blood or platelets for patients in need,” said Carl Leonard, donor services recruitment account manager for the American Red Cross. “The staff at Oklahoma Cancer Specialists and Research Institute did just that last week by donating 24 units of lifesaving blood.”
OCSRI will host their next blood drive on February 15 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those interested can register for upcoming opportunities here.
